Lightly toasted French bread is slathered in dairy free garlic butter to make Vegan Garlic Bread. Not only does the butter go on top of the bread, but it goes on each individual slice as well! Fresh parsley, Italian seasoning and two forms of garlic flavor this versatile side dish.

vegan garlic bread cut up into chunks on sheets of brown parchment paper, red and white striped dish towel in the corner, fresh chopped parsley and a bowl of marinara sauce are surrounding the garlic bread (vegan).

Are you serving pasta, soup, steak, chicken, seafood, fish, pizza or a salad? Guess what? Garlic bread (vegan) goes with ALL of that!

Not only does garlic bread pair well with just about anything, it is also extremely inexpensive to make, and only takes a few minutes to prepare.

    Ingredients needed

Ingredients needed to make vegan garlic bread. Ingredients are laid out on a wooden surface, measured into bowls and labeled with text overlay.
    • French bread - The French bread that I refer to in this recipe is the long, skinny baguette. The French baguette has a chewy texture and a firm crust. The slices are much smaller than a traditional, sandwich-sized slice of bread.
    • Vegan butter - Vegan butter can be found at any larger grocery store or health food store. I've tried several different brands but my favorite brand is Earth Balance. I used the Earth Balance Whipped Buttery Spread for this recipe.
    • Garlic powder
    • Minced garlic
    • Italian seasoning
    • Fresh parsley
    • Salt
    • Pepper

    Kitchen tools needed

    • Cutting board & chopping knife
    • Bread knife
    • Measuring cups & spoons
    • Small microwave-safe mixing bowl
    • Aluminum foil

    How to make

    • Preheat your oven to 350°F.
    • Make sure your loaf of bread will fit in your oven. Some loaves of French bread can be 2 feet long! If your loaf of bread will not fit lengthwise, try putting it in your oven diagonally. If it still won't fit, just cut it in half.
    • Using a sharp bread knife, cut slits in your bread about 1" apart. Do not cut all the way through the bread. Only cut about 90% of the way through each slice of bread. Repeat this process through the entire loaf of bread.
    • Measure the amount of butter needed and scoop it into a microwave-safe bowl. Soften your dairy-free butter in the microwave for 10 seconds.
    • Add the garlic powder, fresh minced garlic, fresh parsley, Italian seasoning, salt and pepper to the butter. Mix well to combine.
    • French bread is shown with slices cut into it. The bread is held up by a hand.
    • Using a spoon, spread 1 teaspoon of the butter mixture in between each slice of bread. Spread any remaining butter on top of the bread.
    • Wrap the loaf of bread in foil. Tent the foil at the top of the bread so that the foil is not touching the butter. You don't want the butter to smear off of the bread and onto the foil.
    • Place the foil-wrapped loaf of bread in the oven and bake for 10 minutes. Open the foil so that the top of the bread is showing. Place the bread back into the oven and continue baking for 5 more minutes.
    • Remove the bread from the oven and let it cool for 5 minutes. Serve and enjoy!
    • French bread slices are slathered with vegan garlic butter. The bread is held up with a hand.

    What is dairy-free butter?

"Regular" butter is a dairy product made from cow's milk. Thankfully, if you have a dairy intolerance or simply try to avoid dairy products, there are many delicious butter alternatives available! Dairy free/vegan butter alternatives are typically made from a combination of plant-based oil. Plant-based oils include palm, soy, olive, avocado, canola and coconut oil. I have tried many different plant-based butters and I find them to be delicious! They taste surprisingly similar to the "real thing."

    Can I use regular butter?

Yes, you can definitely use "regular" butter for this recipe. A cow's milk butter will soften, spread and taste just like the plant-based butter that I used for my vegan garlic bread. No changes to the recipe are needed to make the ingredient swap.

Lightly toasted French bread is slathered in dairy free garlic butter to make Vegan Garlic Bread. Not only does the butter go on top of the bread, but it goes on each individual slice as well! Fresh parsley, Italian seasoning and two kinds of garlic flavor this versatile side dish.

    • Total Time: 25 minutes
    • Yield: 8 servings 1x

    Ingredients

    Scale
    • 1 loaf French bread (24 inches long)
    • 1 cup vegan butter
    • 2 tablespoons garlic powder
    • 1 tablespoon fresh minced garlic
    • 1 tablespoon fresh minced parsley
    • 1 teaspoon Italian seasoning blend
    • ½ teaspoon salt
    • ¼ teaspoon pepper

    Instructions

    1. Before getting started, check to make sure your loaf of French bread will fit in your oven.  French bread can be up to 2 feet long!  If your bread will not fit across your oven horizontally, try laying it diagonally in your oven.  If it still won't fit, simply cut it in half and make two equally sized loaves of bread.
    2. Preheat your oven to 350° F.
    3. Soften the vegan butter in the microwave for 10 seconds.  Mix the softened butter, garlic powder, minced garlic, parsley, Italian seasoning, salt and pepper together.
    4. Using a sharp bread knife, cut slits in your loaf of bread.  Space the slits 1 inch apart and only cut about 90% of the way through each slice of bread.  You want the bread to remain in tact on the bottom.
    5. Spread ½ teaspoon of the garlic butter in between each cut slice of French bread.  Smear the remaining butter on top of the loaf of bread.
    6. Wrap the loaf of vegan garlic bread in foil.  Tent the foil at the top so that there is space between the top of the loaf of bread and the foil.  Try to prevent the foil from touching the top of the bread.
    7. Place the foil wrapped bread in the oven and cook it for 10 minutes.
    8. Remove the bread from the oven, open the foil at the top and place the bread back in the oven for an additional 5 minutes.
    9. Remove the bread from the oven and let cool slightly before serving.  Serve with marinara sauce for dipping.  Enjoy!

    Notes

    • You can prepare your vegan garlic bread ahead of time and cook it right before you're ready to serve it.
    • This recipe is made using a 24 inch French baguette.  If your baguette is not 24 inches long, you can use 2-3 smaller baguettes.
