Why you'll love this recipe
- Delicious and refreshing: Berry Skewers are a light, fresh, and healthy snack or dessert. They're perfect for the warm weather of Memorial Day or the 4th of July.
- Seasonal and colorful: Vibrant and colorful fruit will brighten up the table at your picnic or BBQ. This sweet treat will definitely stand out next to burgers, BBQ grilled chicken drumsticks, and Hot Dogs.
- Easy to make: All you need are skewers, fresh berries, and store-bought angel food cake. You don't need to turn on the stove or the oven to make these!
- Healthy: Fruit is the perfect dessert after you've indulged in burgers, macaroni salad, and cold beers. Plus, they're allergy friendly!
- Patriotic: Red, White, and Blue Berry Skewers easily fit into a patriotic-themed menu.
Ingredients
- Strawberries - I prefer to slice the strawberries into halves, length-wise. I tried thinly slicing the strawberries but they end up too thin and do not stay on the skewers. Look for larger strawberries if you can find them!
- Blueberries - Look for large, succulent, firm blueberries!
- Angel food cake - Angel food cake is a sweet and spongy cake made primarily with egg whites, flour, and sugar. Angel food cake is traditionally made in a tube pan which gives the cake a doughnut shape. I purchased store-bought angel food cake for this recipe, but you can also make your own homemade angel food cake.
Equipment needed
This is a very simple no-bake recipe that doesn't require much kitchen equipment! All you need are 12" bamboo skewers, a cutting board, a chopping knife, and measuring cups.
You could also make mini berry skewers with these 5-inch patriotic skewers!
How to make Berry Skewers
Step 1: Cut the tops off of your strawberries and slice them in half length-wise, from top to bottom. Chop your angel food cake into chunks.
I purchased a regular-sized, 14-ounce angel food cake and only used half of the cake to make 10 skewers. This is a really easy recipe to double if you'd like to use your entire cake!
Step 2: Start threading your strawberries, angel food cake, and blueberries onto your skewers. You can do this in any pattern that you like! I preferred to alternate two pieces of cake with two strawberry halves. I then topped the skewers with 3-4 blueberries.
Thread the sliced strawberries onto the skewers length-wise, from bottom to top.
Step 3: This recipe makes 10 berry skewers. Continue making your skewers until you've used up all of your berries and angel food cake!
Variations and Substitutions
Berries: In addition to strawberries, try using raspberries and blackberries.
Fruit: You can use other kinds of fruit to make fruit kabobs! Try using watermelon, cantaloupe, honeydew, grapes, and pineapple.
Dip: I love dipping fruit skewers into homemade whipped topping. Cream cheese fruit dip, yogurt dip, chocolate fudge, and chocolate hummus are also really yummy!

Pound cake would be an excellent alternative to angel food cake.
Absolutely not! I purchased a pre-made angel food cake from the grocery store for my fruit kabobs.
How to store
If you're making Berry Skewers in advance or have leftovers, you'll want to wrap them tightly in plastic wrap and then store them in the refrigerator. You can make them up to 24 hours ahead of time.
