    Ingredients

All ingredients needed to make the chai latte with matcha are laid out and labeled.
    • Chai tea - If you have been a follower of mine for a while, then you know I always opt for ease and convenience when possible. That is why I chose to use chai tea bags instead of making my own made-from-scratch chai blend. I have been a chai tea lover for decades and I have never been let down by a chai tea bought from the grocery store. As you can see in the ingredient photo, I used Tazo Organic Chai Tea for this recipe. Other tea brands that I love include The Republic of Tea, Oregon Chai, Stash, Yogi and Zhena's Gypsy Tea.
    • Matcha powder - I chose to use Rishi Sweet Matcha for this recipe. Rishi is a premium brand of tea that focuses on quality, sustainability and using certified organic ingredients. Rishi matcha is sourced directly from Japan and is made to easily dissolve into liquids. I chose a sweet matcha because the small amount of added cane sugar balances out the bitter and earthy flavor of pure matcha powder.
    • Oat milk - I tested out a few different brands of oat milk and also tried using unsweetened vanilla oat milk. The result... do NOT use vanilla oat milk for this recipe! It was awful. My favorite brand of oat milk was Chobani Plain Extra Creamy Oat Milk.
    • Maple syrup - Do I even need to tell you to use pure maple syrup? I hope not! Stick with pure and also local if you can! When it comes to local maple syrup, I have seemingly unlimited options here in Northern NY where I live.
    • Cinnamon - Ground cinnamon is an optional ingredient. I sprinkled a little bit into the foam after I poured my oat milk latte into a mug.

    Kitchen Equipment Needed

    • Small saucepan
    • Measuring cups and measuring spoons
    • Whisk
    • Handheld electric milk frother

How to make a Matcha Chai Latte

    1. Simmer - Warm 1 cup of water in a small saucepan on the stove for 2-5 minutes - until simmering.
    2. Steep - Remove from heat and steep two chai tea bags in the hot water for 5 minutes.
    3. Add - Remove the chai tea bags from the hot tea water and add 1 cup of oat milk, 2 teaspoons of sweet matcha green tea powder and 1 teaspoon of pure maple syrup.
    4. Whisk - Gently whisk all ingredients together until the matcha powder has fully dissolved.
    5. Warm - Turn the stove burner back on and gently warm the oat milk latte blend back up to a simmer.
    6. Froth- Remove the saucepan from the heat. Using a handheld milk frother (foam maker), carefully froth the matcha chai latte for 30 seconds to create foam. Be careful during this step! The hot liquid can splash up onto your hands, arms and face.
    7. Serve and enjoy while it's nice and hot! This recipe serves 1 - 2 people.
    • Chai tea bags are steeping in hot water in a small sauce pan.
    • All ingredients for the matcha chai latte are added to the saucepan.
    • All ingredients for the chai matcha latte are in a small saucepan and the drink has been blended with a frother and has foam on top.

    What is a latte?

A latte, as it's known in English, is a classic coffee drink with Italian origins. A latte traditionally has two ingredients, espresso and steamed milk, with a thin layer of foam on top. Latte's have exploded in popularity and have become highly customizable. In this recipe, I have swapped the espresso for chai tea and customized the rest of the drink with matcha and maple syrup.

    What is matcha?

Matcha is a type of powdered green tea that is traditionally consumed in East Asia. Matcha has skyrocketed in popularity in the United States and can now regularly be found on the menu at your favorite coffee shop. Unlike traditional herbal teas that are steeped in hot water, matcha tea is a powder that dissolves in hot water when whisked. Matcha has been found to be higher in antioxidants than regular green tea. It also tends to have more caffeine than regular green tea.

    Ingredients

    Units Scale
    • 1 cup water
    • 2 chai tea bags
    • 1 cup unsweetened oat milk
    • 2 teaspoons sweet matcha powder
    • 1 teaspoon maple syrup
    • Optional - ground cinnamon

    Instructions

    1. In a small saucepan over medium heat, bring the 1 cup of water to a simmer.
    2. Remove from heat, add in the two chai tea bags, and steep for 5 minutes.
    3. Remove the chai tea bags and discard.  Add the oat milk, sweet matcha powder and maple syrup.  Whisk until the matcha powder is fully dissolved.
    4. Return the saucepan to the heat and bring the latte blend back up to a simmer.
    5. Remove from heat again and carefully froth the oat milk latte using a handheld milk frother.  Froth for 30 seconds.  Be extremely careful during this step.  The hot liquid can splash up onto you during frothing.
    6. Pour your Matcha Chai Latte into 1 large coffee mug or two small mugs.  Top with a sprinkle of ground cinnamon.  Serve and enjoy!

    Notes

    • Be extremely careful frothing hot liquids with a handheld milk frother.  The hot liquid can splash up onto your skin and causes a burn.
    • The frothing step is only used to create foam.  This step can be skipped if you do not have a milk frother.

    Possible substitutions

    • Swap out the maple syrup for honey or agave nectar! If you substitute in honey then the recipe would no longer be considered vegan though as honey comes from bees.
    • Instead of oat milk try almond milk, coconut milk or dairy-based milk. The dairy-based milk would mean the recipe is no longer vegan though!
    • You can make your own chai tea blend from dried herbs instead of using a tea bag. This DIY Chai Spice Mix recipe shows you how to make your own!

    FAQ

    Does chai tea have caffeine?

Yes. Chai tea is made from black tea, which contains caffeine.

    Does matcha tea have caffeine?

Yes. Matcha usually has more caffeine than green tea and less caffeine than brewed coffee. It's caffeine content is similar to black tea.

Why doesn't this matcha chai latte recipe turn out green?

Good question... I was surprised by that myself! The dark brown color from the chai, mixed with the white oat milk, overpowers any green color from the matcha powder.
